2021/22 CALL FOR PRESENTERS

Social Justice Movements in Orange County

Orange County Archives in Action is a group dedicated to bringing together libraries, special collections, museums, cultural heritage institutions and community members to highlight the known and unknown stories of Orange County. By doing so, we aim to increase awareness and improve access to OC’s unique history from a variety of perspectives. We are especially committed to bringing the histories of communities underrepresented, misrepresented or absent from narratives about the OC region to the forefront, and support communities telling their own stories on their own terms. We believe in the power of archives to cultivate understanding and respect, foster collaboration, and build community.

The Orange County Archives Bazaar is planning on going virtual in the fall…And we want YOU to be a part of the fun!

We are looking for presentations, talks, workshops, panels, and other activities on the topic of activism and social justice movements in Orange County. Do you have experience teaching with primary sources in the classroom? Could you lead a virtual “history crawl” through engaging historical locations in your city? Do you want to expand our understanding of what constitutes activism and social justice? Let us know!

For questions about becoming a presenter, please email ocarchivesbazaar@gmail.com.

The City of Anaheim boasts an impressive amount of historic properties beautifully maintained in their own respective styles – but how did Anaheim come to have such a community of well-preserved historic homes, and people who are invested in their stories? Presenters Diann Marsh, Phyllis Mueller, Christine Nguyen, and Meghan Shigo relate the history of the historic preservation movement in Anaheim, how invested residents stopped the destruction of historic properties in their community, and the current state of historic preservation in the City.

Sometimes, collective historical memory in Orange County tends to focus on the same faces and places: white, wealthy, and mostly male. This session explores other ways of thinking about Orange County’s history and significant spaces, beyond the well-known landmarks. The virtual event will include a representative from Preserve OC, a county-wide preservation advocacy group, and the co-authors of A People’s Guide to Orange County, an alternative history and tour guide of Orange County that documents sites of oppression, resistance, and transformation, followed by a facilitated discussion with audience members. The session will culminate in an interactive “mapping” of stories from the audience onto a Jamboard that features ideas for new historical landmarks.
